From Art to Crime!

From Art to Crime!

Cyber Security and Behaviour, what does that mean? How did I end up studying something that I have never heard of it before and was not interested during my schooling years?

Ever since I remember, I have always wanted to do something that is creative and or design but now I am doing Bachelor of Cyber Security and Behaviour, something completely different from what I was originally wanted and planned. Remembering when I was in year 7, one of my core subjects was Art and for the life of me I couldn’t draw even a stick figure but, I knew that I have a creative side to me because both of my parents are very creative and are great artists.

Knowing that when I finish high school, I would get a university degree either in Fashion or Interior Design. Therefore, from early year 8 I started to work really hard during my Art classes and this had paid off; all of my exam results were 100%. I was so sure that I want to spend all of my life working in this field of carer that I did a VET course in year 11 which was Interior Design Certificate III. While I was looking through the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) marks, unfortunately the mark for Interior Design at a university I wanted to go to was too high for me because I wasn’t sure if I would be able to achieve it.

ATAR

Towards the end of year 12, I was doubting if I would be able to achieve my dreams of becoming a worldwide known Interior Designer. I started to look around for alternative courses that I could do and that I would like. Due to the fact that I am a realistic person who thinks more about the long-term accomplishments rather than the short-term. It was really hard for me to choose a course that fulfilled my ability.

Interior Design

When it was finally time to choose my university course, I was lost in scrolling through each courses and universities. During this time of distress, I knew one thing that whatever course I choose, it needs to be computer related as due to my disability; where my physical activity is very limited- therefore, whatever I want, I can do it on a computer. I clearly remember the day I had to choose my course for university, while scrolling through University Admission Centre (UAC) I came across Cyber Security and Behaviour. The first thought that crossed my mind was “This is something I can do” and I was lucky enough to get accepted.

UAC

I am so grateful that I received this opportunity because through this course I’m able to make an impact on the world and that my disability doesn’t affect the outcome of my work. Also, I love all things about crime, and I want to learn how to protect myself and others from hackers. After university I want to work in a big corporate as a Cyber Security Officer.

  1. Hey Jemra, I loved reading your blog post as it was your perspective of your own life. The fact that you were honest and open is what made it even better to read. I relate closely to your blog post as I also didn't think I would of chosen this course, but I wouldn't have it any other way. The only thing you can potentially work on in your future blog posts is integrating more pictures to really bring out your blog more, other than that you did a great job. :)

  2. Hi Jemra ! Your blog is very enjoyable to read and very relatable to me too. I still clearly remember that time when I was juggling between degrees. Good job on being very honest and sharing your experience with us. Sure there are more students that can relate to this too :)

  3. Hello Jemra. This blog was a great read as it had a personalised touch. It felt as if I was going through that period of your life with you. This allowed me to empathise with your story. However, there are many parts which I thought could be elaborated on, to add further detail and immersion to your recount. For example, the "disability" you mentioned several times in the blog could be outlined as it did not provide to the recount, because I could not relate the struggle to the "disability" as the reader, and I did not know what the disability was. Furthermore, describing what certain terminology means in the blog would allow for a wider audience to fully appreciate the blog. Terms such as "ATAR" and "UAC" are very culturally based, and would only relate to audiences from New South Wales, Australia. By explaining what these terms mean, you could expose this blog to a wider audience.

Additionally, I suggest you spend extra time proofreading your blog, as there is strange capitalisation on words such as "university", grammar issues, and formatting inconsistencies. When you mention that you are a "realistic person", have you thought about what it is that makes you a "realistic person"? Furthermore, this could relate to Raffaele Rodogno's theory of personal identity, and our 'attachment identity'. This attachment identity is based off what is of importance to us. So what is of importance to you, that defines you as a "realistic person" Jemra?
